Big Apple Bagel

Whenever I feel like getting a quick breakfast before class, I usually go to Bruegger’s Bagels on Grand River or any one of the Starbucks around MSU’s campus. I am a bagel person. I love a warmed bagel with a lot of schmear. I love bagel breakfast sandwiches. I love a bagel with some lox on it. I don’t care, just hand over the bagel.

This week, I went to Big Apple Bagels on East Saginaw Street here in East Lansing. It’s in a small strip mall. The ambiance of the store was pretty basic, but it was comfortable and I could see myself sitting down to read the paper and eat breakfast. I decided to get two items: a toasted onion bagel with jalapeno cheddar cream cheese and the Southern Traditional Breakfast Sandwich on a toasted Asiago bagel. I got both of these AND a medium coffee for under $10. That put me in a good mood before even taking my food out of the bag. On my Southern bagel, there was scrambled eggs, bacon, and American cheese. I decided to add onion cream cheese for extra creaminess. It. Was. Delicious. There was so much cheese on this sandwich: in the bagel itself, the American cheese, and the cream cheese. I really love cheese, so this is all good in my book. The toasted onion bagel was good in itself; it was toasted wonderfully and wasn’t overdone. The cream cheese inside of it made it spectacular though. The jalapeno cheddar cream cheese was a great balance of heat with sharp cheddar cheese in cool cream cheese.

The coffee, sadly, was nothing special. It was decent and I enjoyed the cup of coffee that brought me back to life for the day. The best thing about it was that I paid under $2 for it – something that I wouldn’t be able to say had I gone to Starbucks for breakfast.

Ratings for Big Apple Bagels (out of 5):

1. Flavor: 4 The bagels had the perfect chewiness and great flavor. The cream cheese selection was unique as well. You could be adventurous with your bagel toppings or have one of their great sandwiches.

2. Price: 5   I got two huge bagels and a medium size coffee for under $10. I had leftovers for a second meal and it tasted just as good the second time around. Great bang for your buck.

3. Selection/Menu: 3   They have a pretty slim menu. Although you can get creative with your toppings or sandwich items, it’s a basic bagel and sandwich shop.

4. Ambiance: 3   Nothing special here. You walk in, get in line, and there’s a decent sized sitting area. However, the fast and kind service made up for lack of interesting decor.

Hello! I’m Kristen, a senior at Michigan State University. I’ve lived in East Lansing for a almost 4 years now, and I think there is a lot more to explore in East Lansing and downtown Lansing. I want to share my experiences and opinions on restaurants, cool coffee shops, and bars so MSU and LCC students can know more about where they live!

Who am I? Besides being an Advertising student, I’m a big TV/movie buff. I can watch movies all day and The Food Network endlessly. I grew up in Metro Detroit, and I’m a huge Red Wings fan. Outside of school, I love to travel. I was fortunate enough to have parents who love traveling, so I visited a lot of the United States while growing up and went to France in high school. In each city I visited, it was so cool to see how the culture – including and especially the food and drinks – were different.

What is this blog about? I wanted to start a blog and restaurants, bars, and coffee shops around the Lansing area because as I’ve gone through college, my taste in food and drink has changed a lot. I want to branch out from my usual spots around town. I’ve become a coffee-a-holic and a lover of hoppy beers. I like to try new things at restaurants now instead of always getting what I’ve always stuck with. From my own experience and talking to other MSU and LCC students, many people don’t trek into downtown Lansing to get coffee or a meal. That’s completely understandable because we all get busy with classes, work, and all other hectic parts of life, but I want to adventure to the capitol of my state, see what it has to offer, and share my experiences with people so they can become more knowledgeable about where we live.

Hopcat Hangs

My first spot in the East Lansing area to try was Hopcat, located on the corner of Grove and Albert. This restaurant, known for its burgers and having over 100 beers on tap, is fairly well-known around campus, but I had not yet had the pleasure of dining there besides just getting a beer with friends. I finally went with a couple roommates to see what the hype was about.

The decor and lighting of the restaurant was dark. Metal lined the walls and the enormous wrap-around bar had LED lights wrapped around, emphasizing the diverse beer selection. The beer list was the same size as the food menu and was double-sided. I had an Evil-Czech General George Patton Pilsner, which I loved. It had a light body with a smooth, hoppy taste. I love hops, so I thought this beer would be a good beginner’s beer if somebody is trying less fruity beers. I’m confident in saying that Hopcat has a beer for everybody.

The burger was delicious. I got the olive burger, which had chopped greens olives, blue cheese, swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing on it. It was very decadent, and I couldn’t finish the entire thing, but in that moment, I swear I was in burger heaven. Besides the burger, however, I had to try the famous crack fries. Crack fries are fries that have a special blend of seasonings on them – nobody knows the exact combination of seasonings, of course. These fries, although they were pretty salty, were amazing. My roommate told me to get a side of beer cheese to dip them in. I’m telling you, it was a religious experience. Every time I visit Hopcat from now on, even if it’s just to get drinks, I’m going to order crack fries. They are the most aptly named item on the menu.

Ratings for Hopcat (out of 5):

1. Flavor: 4   I cannot get those crack fries out of my head, but while the burger was delicious, I didn’t find it remarkable.

2. Price: 4   For my meal, I paid under $14 for my entire meal of a pint of beer, a 1/2 pound burger, and a sizeable side of crack fries with dipping cheese. For the quality of the food and beer, I think the price is extremely reasonable.

3. Selection/Menu: 5   I’m going to give the selection a high score of 5 because of the diverse beer menu and their food options. Despite the menu containing normal bar fare food, the ingredients in the items weren’t ordinary.

4. Ambiance: 4   The ambiance of Hopcat was that of a hip, sexy bar. Especially because I went at night, the mood lighting was dark and highlighted the decor of the restaurant. The metal sheet walls and simple artwork made it seem like I was in a more urban city than East Lansing.

Overall, if you’re in the Lansing/East Lansing area, I would highly recommend visiting Hopcat – especially if you are of drinking age. It’s the perfect place to have a drink and a quality, very filling meal for a good price.
